On March 28, 1384 King Richard II of England issued a decree condemning the eating of cats, and cats in the West have been heaving a sigh of relief ever since! Cats are especially useful creatures given their ability to hunt and kill mice and rats, the source of plague in Medieval Europe. By forbidding the eating of cats, King Richard ensured more cats and fewer rats were around.
